The Counseling Center is here to help with personal, academic, or career concerns.  The primary goal of psychological counseling is to help students develop the personal awareness and skills necessary to overcome problems and to grow and develop in ways that will allow them to take advantage of the educational opportunities at the university. You may have up to eight free individual or couples sessions per semester, or unlimited group therapy (when available).  Counseling is confidential. 

The Counseling Center is located in Bldg 400 Room 413 and the phone number is 661-952-5099. Please stop in or call if you have any questions; office hours are as follows:

Monday 8:00am - 5:00pm

Tuesday 8:30am - 1:30pm (AVC Palmdale Center: 8:00am - 12:00pm)  

Wednesday 8:30am - 5:00pm

Thursday 8:30am - 1:30pm 

Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm  

 The Counseling Center provides telephone crisis counseling during the times the Center is closed.  Students can speak to a crisis counselor by dialing the Bakersfield Counseling Center phone number (661-654-3366) and PRESS 2. The crisis counselors can provide referrals and information about campus and community resources, as well as provide immediate help with urgent personal, emotional, or mental health concerns.

About Dr. Coy:

Dr. Karen Coy received her Ph.D. from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1993.  She previously worked at Counseling Centers at VCU, Pennsylvania State University and Fort Hays State University in Kansas.  She has been a licensed clinical psychologist in California since 1997.
