Live Theater

Dedicated to high-quality, professionally produced plays and musicals, Shadowland is located in the charming village of Ellenville, in Ulster County NY. Ellenville is 100 miles from NY City in a picturesque and narrow valley between the Shawangunk Mountains to the east and the Catskill Mountains to the west.
Shadowland performs in its own building, which first opened on July 3, 1920, as an art-deco movie and vaudeville house. Substantial renovations in recent years have completely rebuilt the interior of the old theatre, retaining the art-deco features while creating a tiered, 179 seat, intimate semi-thrust stage. All seats are within 35 feet of the stage and have clear sightlines in the technically well-equipped and acoustically outstanding space. Other improvements include a new inner lobby, restoration of the outer lobby, new lighting grid, all new sound equipment and control booth, refurbished dressing rooms and updated bathrooms.

Earliest settlers of the area now known as the Town of Wawarsing were, of course, the Indians. In this region of the Hudson Valley, they were the Esopus, a clan of the Lenni-Lenape. The 1663 daily journal of Martin Cregier, a captain in the Dutch army, records a foray to the Indian fort at Wawarsing in an attempt to rescue settlers from Hurley who had been captured about a month earlier. This was probably the white man's first visit to the Town of Wawarsing.
