EMERGENCY DENTAL CARE

If you sustain damage to your mouth, it can be painful and frightening. To alleviate pain and ensure your oral health is preserved, prompt treatment is generally required. If you're dealing with a dental emergency, call us immediately at (515) 961-8411.

CHIPPED OR CRACKED TOOTH

If you chip or crack a tooth, save any tooth fragments (if there are any) and place them in a cup of your saliva or milk. This helps preserve the tooth fragment. To clean the area, rinse out your mouth with warm water. Apply a cold pack to your face to keep the swelling down. Call our office immediately to schedule emergency dental care.

A TOOTHACHE

If you are experiencing a toothache, rinse out your mouth to clean the area. To further clean your mouth, gently use dental floss to remove any food caught between your teeth. You can also take an over the counter painkiller to relieve the ache. Applying a cold pack to the area can help dull the pain. If the pain persists, see your dentist as soon as possible.

OBJECT STUCK IN TEETH OR MOUTH

If something gets caught in your mouth or teeth, do not use a sharp or pointed instrument to remove the object. Instead, use dental floss to help remove the object. You can also try gently brushing your teeth and rinsing out your mouth with water. If you are unable to remove the object on your own, please contact our office immediately or go to the emergency room.

KNOCKED OUT TOOTH

If one of your teeth has been knocked out, the most important thing to do is find the tooth and keep it clean. When handling the tooth, hold it from the top and do not touch the root. If the tooth is dirty, do not clean it with soap or scrub it. Simply rinse with water. The likelihood a tooth can be saved goes down dramatically after an hour, so it is important to keep it moist and see your dentist immediately. You can keep it moist by storing it in your cheek or placing it back in the socket. Placing it in a cup of your saliva or in milk will also work.

BIT TONGUE OR LIP

Have you bitten your tongue or lip? Gently rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area. To reduce swelling, you can place a cold pack on your face. If the pain persists, see your dentist as soon as possible or go to the emergency room.
