The rotary jail, built in 1882, was the first of eighteen rotary jails constructed in the United States and is currently the only rotary jail in operating condition. The building is an amazing example of complex engineering and stands as a tribute to the designers, William Brown and Benjamin Haugh. The rotary cellblock, consisting of 16 wedge-shaped cells on two tiers, is housed within a stationary steel cage with one opening per story.
