Boys & Girls Club of Mont. Co.
Our member’s education is very important to us here at the Club. During the school year on Monday through Thursday, the Classroom is utilized as a center where our members can get help from full time and part time staff as well as volunteers from the community with homework and other school projects. During our summer program and on Fridays during our after school program the classroom is also utilized for organized games like bingo, hangman, win, lose, or draw, musical chairs, chess, checkers, and many others, as well as working puzzles and completing math and language arts worksheets. The classroom is also used during the after-school and summer programs to host special programs and encourage healthy living and having a good sense of civic responsibility.
Reinforces the academic enrichment & school engagement of young people during the time they spend at the Club.
Based on research that students do much better in school when they spend their non-school hours engaged in fun, but academically beneficial, activities, the Club staff uses all of the areas and programs in the Club to create opportunities for high yield learning activities. From writing activities, leisure reading, to discussions with knowledgeable adults, and helping others, Homework help, tutoring, and games (such as Scrabble), that develop young people’s cognitive skills. Project Learn also emphasizes parent involvement and collaboration between Club and school professionals as critical factors in creating the best after-school learning environment between the ages of 6 to 18.
We like to allow our Club members to enjoy the use of the Computer Lab while teaching them to use technology in a safe and responsible way. During the school year, we utilize the lab for our Project Learn to program by giving the members goals to reach playing different language arts and math games and having them do scavenger hunts for information on educational websites. Members also make use of the Microsoft Office tools for some of their school projects. In the summer the lab is used for playing different fun and recreational games where members attempt to make the top score and are awarded for their participation. We also use the lab to implement the Club Tech National Boys and Girls Club program where our members can do online tutorials to help them better use the internet and other tools on the computers in a safer, more effective, and responsible way.
The Library is used as a place for quiet, calm and reading as well as a place to get together with friends and talk and play. During the after-school and summer programs, the library is used to do different reading and writing activities. We also use the library for Project Learn activities as well. Members also are able to play chess, checkers, Lego’s and blocks, board games and read recreationally in the library.
