Historic Downtown Revitalization – Planning, Re-purposing, Façade Improvement, and Upper Story Housing :

Curtis Architecture has worked closely with Iowa Historic Preservation, Iowa Economic Development Authority, ISU COGS, City Councils, and Iowa Main Street for many years.  Grants are available if you know the proper channels.   Both public and private projects have been accepted.

Planning – We have experience in streetscape, facade improvements, multiple building design layouts, and master planning.  All, of which, are vital when rejuvenating the historic downtown area in any community.

Repurposing – Often times a historic building no longer fits the original purpose it was intended for.  Curtis Architecture can creatively help a building become a “productive citizen” once again.  Certainly, historic significance, code compliance, function, and existing condition play a big part in re-purposing.  Historic buildings present a unique challenge in that the proposed floor plan does not fit into the existing footprint of the building.  We have a lot of experience with incorporating your functional needs inside a rigid perimeter.  If you do not need all of the building main floor we have examples of successful back door designs that work well and provide additional rental income.

Façade Improvement – Whether you want to properly protect your historic building with proper materials and construction methods, or simply want an upgraded appearance we have the experience to help you.  Curtis Architecture has been involved in hundreds of new facades.  Oskaloosa, Ottumwa, and Fairfield have recently taken advantage of state funded façade improvement projects that have greatly impacted their downtown districts.

Upper Story Housing – Living in the downtown district provides energy and sustainability to the central business district.  Proper upper story housing improvements should involve several participants, such as; city officials, inspectors, district groups such as the Chamber or Main Street, and neighboring building owners.  Curtis Architecture can help the collaborative effort needed to ensure a successful downtown living environment.  We have experience in apartment/condo design projects.
