What is a Crown?
A crown also called a cap, is a cover that protects the top of a tooth. It may be used to restore and preserve a decayed, broken or cracked tooth. Crowns can also correct some cosmetic tooth problems, giving you a better smile. Restoring your tooth with a crown may take 1 or 2 dental visits, with 2-3 weeks between appointments. Follow the instructions that your dentist gives you.

First, the tooth is reduced and shaped, and any decay is removed. Your tooth may also need to be rebuilt if larger parts are missing. A mold is taken of the prepared tooth and surrounding teeth. A temporary crown is then placed to protect the prepared tooth between visits. When the crown is returned to the office from the lab, the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is placed on your tooth. The crown is fitted to make sure your bite feels normal. Once both the dentist and the patient agree that the fit is good, the crown is cemented in place.

Living with a Crown
Your new crown will help you chew easier. You may also feel more confident about your smile. Be sure to brush and floss well so your crown will last longer. Don't forget to see your dentist as instructed.
