Without the help of our volunteers we would be severely limited in our ability to make a positive effect on helping animals in our community. The number of dogs that get to go to outreach adoption sites is directly related to the number of volunteers that are available to help. Volunteers help us get our animals into "forever" homes by helping us show them off at places like Petco.

A survey of our volunteers shows that the top reasons for volunteering include love of animals, being able to help others, the satisfaction of making a difference, and a way to meet like-minded people. Ten year volunteer, Craig Simmons, describes his experience as “satisfying and rewarding.”

There is no minimum time requirement and we offer a wide variety of volunteer opportunities. We provide orientation and offer a free three tiered training program for volunteers conducted at the shelter.

At HSAR, the three things we have found that animals thrive on are human contact, consistency and routine and we have adopted that triangle as our theme in working to fulfill the needs of the animals in our care. Our volunteers provide the TLC (tender loving care) needed to socialize our animals and ready them for their “Forever” homes.
