Adult Literacy Program Serving AZ SW Valley
In 1977, Dorothy Huntsman, a Librarian of the Buckeye Public Library, became aware of the need for local services to teach non-English speaking persons how to speak, read, and write English.
After investigating current programs, she discovered an outstanding, practical curriculum published by Laubach Literacy International.
The system is ideal for tutoring students on a one-to-one basis and could be taught by volunteers who had no teaching experience. A training course was necessary so that each tutor could be qualified using the Laubach Method curriculum.
She organized the non-profit program and it has successfully produced scores of tutors and students in Buckeye, Avondale, Goodyear, Tolleson, Litchfield Park and surrounding areas.
Although Mrs. Huntsman (now in her nineties) retired from directing the program in 2002, she is still going strong and is still an honorary member of the board and works at various trainings and meetings.
You can contact Mrs. Huntsman through our office at 623.695-4321.
