In 1789, nearly twenty families from Roxbury, Connecticut, embarked on a journey as “land lookers” searching for a new permanent settlement. After passing several potential clearances they arrived at Benjamin Barlow’s in Stamford, near the mouth of Rose Brook on the Delaware River. In early 1799, the village of Roxbury was created from portions of Stamford and named to honor the home town of the first settlers.
