What is a sealant?
A dental sealant is a preventive treatment we offer to protect your teeth from decay. The sealant is a thin coating of resin or plastic material that we paint onto the chewing surface of the tooth. Sealants are most often applied to the permanent molars and premolars (back teeth), which have natural pits and grooves that are common sites of decay. The sealant creates a barrier over these pits and grooves to block out the bacteria, food particles, and acids that lead to tooth decay. The dental sealant also helps to create a smoother surface on the tooth, which makes it easier to keep clean through normal tooth brushing.
Do I need sealants?
Dr. Ronald Fuhrmann typically recommends dental sealants in Virginia Beach, Virginia, for children when their permanent molars and premolars come in, which is usually between the ages of 6 and 12 years. We may also suggest sealants for adults’ teeth if they do not have existing decay or restorations. The process for applying sealants requires just one comfortable visit to our office and involves no needles, shots, or drills. We invite you to call or visit our dental practice today for more information about the benefits of preventive dentistry and to set up your next visit with our dentist.
