Lassen County: Westwood and Clear Creek

Westwood is located 11 miles east-northeast of Chester and 20 miles west-southwest of Susanville, at an elevation of 5128 feet. With a population of 1600, Westwood is home to the Annual Paul Bunyan Festival, and the famous Paul Bunyan and Babe monument, a tradition that began in Westwoods rich logging history. In 1913 Westwood became the center of operations for the Red River Lumber Company and a company town. As far back as the 1930s Westwood hosted a large indoor shopping mall, a large theater, skating rink and club for the mill workers. The town was sold in 1944 to the Fruit Growers Supply Company, which today is known as part of Sunkist. Though these company town amenities no longer grace the community of Westwood, its rich logging history and company town traditions can be seen in the quaint company housing that still lines its streets. Clear Creek is a beautiful hamlet on the east side of Dyer Mountain lying half way between Westwood and Lake Almanor. Clear Creek is host to one of the more beautiful public parks in the area.
